Emergency dentistry

At The Dentists of Australia, we understand that dental emergencies can occur at any time and can be quite painful and sometimes frightening. In most cases, it is important to get to one of our clinics as soon as possible so our dentists can assess the severity of each case. Below are some handy tips to help us make sure you’re back to smiling again in no time.

Common Dental Emergencies

Chipped tooth

Often, chips occur from opening packages or packets with our teeth or from a recreational activity. It is important that the mouth area is rinsed with saliva or salty water to get rid of any dirt then call our clinic so they can assess the seriousness of the chip. Sometimes, an ice pack can help to reduce swelling if the chip was caused by a hard fall.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH

These are quite common, particularly in contact sports, and can be helped if you ensure you get to the dentist as soon as possible. Our dentists understand that these emergencies require a timely response and will make room in our schedules for such appointments. Try to keep the tooth in its original position after a quick wash with saliva or salty water to get rid of any dirt. If this is not possible, keep it as moist as possible such as in milk or wrapped in plastic. Remember, try not to touch the root, but hold the tooth at the crown instead.

TOOTHACHES

This is a common occurrence and can be quite aggravating, depending on the severity of the pain. Pain relief can help to ease discomfort but it is vital you contact our clinic so they can assess the reason for the pain.

ABSCESS

This type of emergency can become quite serious, even life-threatening, if not treated promptly. An abscess is an infection which can cause damage to the nerves and surrounding gum and will need to be treated by a dentist as soon as possible. Pain relief may help to ease discomfort.

DAMAGED FILLING OR CROWN

This generally occurs with the growth of a cavity beneath the crown or filling. It can be quite painful when eating and drinking as your tooth is exposed, making it sensitive to heat and cold. Our dentists will be able to replace your crown or filling, so you can get back to enjoying life again!

REMEMBER

Remember: Prompt response to dental emergencies can make a huge difference so don’t delay. Contact us if you or your loved one is in need of an emergency appointment.
